How to Prepare Your Team for Its Best Football Season Yet
Depending on your team, coaching might not be a year-round responsibility. But any coach needs to do at least some work in the off-season to prepare for game time. Preparing for the preseason and season effectively will give your team its best chance for success.
It’s impossible to get where you want to go if you don’t know where you want to go. Setting goals is one of the most important steps, if not the most important step, in developing a winning team.
Determine what your personal goals are, some examples include:
- Improving player motivation
- Developing a winning attitude
- Coaching at the next level
and what your team goals are
- Playing better defense
- Achieving a winning season
- Making the playoffs
Write down your goals and put them somewhere you will see them every day. Your players should also be determining their own individual goals for the upcoming season. Deciding exactly what you want to accomplish is the first step in creating a realistic plan for accomplishing it.
Do Your Research
Now is the time to increase your knowledge about how to be a better coach. Read the books you’ve been meaning to read, participate in workshops and clinics, consult the experts and even other coaches. There is a vast amount of excellent material out there to discover. It’s tough to do these things when the season starts. You don’t have an excuse not to do them now.
Plan Practice, and Evaluate Your Plan
Running effective practices is probably the single best way to improve performance on the field. Team practices should be scripted down to the minute to keep players engaged and motivated. Carefully evaluate each part of practice.
Are your drills tightly focused on realistic, in-game situations?
Do you spend too much time teaching the game plan instead of practicing it, or vice versa?
Are you maximizing your assistant’s time?
It’s easy to get into a routine of practicing the same way year after year. If you’re in a rut, get out of it.
Off-season strength training and conditioning plans should be carefully reevaluated too. Improving muscle balance continues to be a key goal for top performance and injury prevention. Make sure your training program is as effective as it can be by keeping up with current research and the best ways to implement it.
Take Stock Now
Taking stock of team equipment and ordering new gear can be a somewhat tedious chore, but doing so well in advance takes this off your plate as the season approaches. Now is the time to lock in your budget and take the necessary steps to have what you need when practice begins. Ensure your team will be equipped with the highest quality, custom Football jerseys for the upcoming season. It will give them a final boost to really give their all in every game. When they look like champions, they will play like champions!
Plan Out the Season
Each week–even each day–of the preseason and season should be planned out in as much detail as possible. Ideally, each week should build on what you accomplished the week before. During the season, you’ll need to tailor preparations for each opponent. Determining in advance the specific challenge each game presents will help you create the best plan, and give your team its best chance of success.
Practice makes perfect, don’t forget!
