Uniform Spotlight: Steelers Take Us Back to the 70s
The Pittsburgh Steelers have announced new throwback uniforms for 2018, paying homage to the team’s late 70s Super Bowl Championships. The announcement for the new Steelers uniforms appeared on Twitter on May 31st, featuring a photoshoot with wide receiver Juju Smith-Schuster.
BEHIND THE STEEL CURTAIN
2018 marks the 40th anniversary of the Steelers’ Super Bowl XIII victory in 1979. The team also won in 1980, and earlier in 1975 and 1976. The 1970s saw some of the team’s best-known players, including Terry Bradshaw, and its classic “Steel Curtain Defense.” With their new uniform, the Steelers honor this iconic period in their history.
WHAT’S NEW WITH THIS LOOK?
While the changes in the new Steelers uniform are mostly subtle, it has the look of a classic jersey.

THE MAIN DIFFERENCES:
- The Steelers logo has been removed from the chest
- Block lettering replaces the previous, well-known italic font
Nike has also modified the make and fit of the uniform, and the block lettering is brought to life with some beautiful stitching, which can be seen in the official announcement video.
WHAT ABOUT THE HELMET?
At this time, there’s no word whether the iconic Steelers helmet will receive a makeover any time soon.
The Steelers are the only team in the NFL who don’t display their team logo on both sides of their helmet. Their logo has been the same side since the Steelers adopted it from the US Steel Corporation.
The classic Steelmark logo features three diamond shapes representing the three materials needed to make steel: coal (yellow), iron ore (red/orange), and steel scrap (blue).
While some fans are calling the throwbacks a game of “spot the difference,” many others will be glad to see the block lettering replace the previous “bumblebee” throwbacks. For Thursday Night Football, the team will continue featuring its “color rush” uniforms, which swap out the white lettering with gold.
News of the new steelers uniforms gives fans plenty of time to get excited before they’ll see them on the field in the October 28th match against the Cleveland Browns!
